14th INFANTRY REGIMENT. (Hunter River)

Pre Word War One

"Compulsory Military Training Scheme that was introduced in 1910, which was directly responsible for expanding the Citizens Forces by up to 50 percent in the three years prior to the outbreak of World War I. Undoubtedly, the scheme proved to have numerous benefits, as many of these youths went on to serve in the First AIF during World War I and the expanded organisation allowed citizens forces officers more experience in commanding formed bodies of men. However, it was the main factors contributing to the decision to recruit the AIF on the basis of voluntary enlistment. Because the army in 1914 was largely made up of young men aged between 19 and 21 who had been enlisted under this scheme, and due to the provisions of the Defence Act that precluded sending conscripts overseas, upon the outbreak of the war it was necessary for the Australian government to raise a separate force, outside of the Citizens Forces organisation for service overseas."

CESSNOCK.  Special Empire services were hold in St. John's Church of England on Sunday. The evening service was the principal one, and was conducted by the rector, the Rev. Reay Campbell, assisted by the Rev. G. B. Stephenson and Mr. J. Jacobs, B.A., honorary lay reader. The Area 14B Cadet Band, under Staff Sergeant-Major Jones, was In attendance and marched from tile railway station, playing patriotic music en route. The church was packed to its fullest capacity, and many were unable to gain admittance. The preacher delivered a most eloquent address, and chose his text from Isaiah xiv., 16th verse: "Is this the man who made the world tremble, and destroyed the cities thereof." Appropriate hymns were rendered by the choir, under Choirmaster Mr. W. Gray. Mrs. H. Weatherall officiated at the organ. The service concluded with tile singing of the National Anthem, to the accompaniment of the hand. A public meeting was held in the "Cinema" Picture Theatre on Sunday morning to make arrangements for the reception of Private F. Brown, who is shortly to arrive home from the front, and who has had the misfortune to lose a leg. There was a large attendance, and a strong committee were chosen. The office-bearers are : President, Mr A Biggers; secretary, Mr. E. King; treasurer, Mr J Curery. It is expected that tile committee will become a permanent reception body, and remain' in existence during the currency of the war. Councillor Tulloch presided over a meeting of the Cessnock War Service Committee at the Cessnock Council Chambers on Friday evening. Mr. W. M . Buchanan, chief recording officer of the State Recruiting Council, delivered an address on the need of speeding up the war service work and the methods that might be adopted. Mr. A. L. Skelton, shire clerk, tendered his resignation as secretary of the committee, and Mr. R. J. Winning was appointed to the vacancy. As the accommodation at the Shire Chamber was limited, it was decided that the matter of securing a new place of meeting be .left in the hands of Messrs. Winning, Kearsley and Cain. A resolution was adopted asking the shire council to give hearty co-operation towards the formation of sub-committees in important centres to work in conjunction with the war service committee. It was also decided to ask the shire council to procure a motor bicycle, either by hire or purchase, for the recruiting sergeant. The recruiting movement came up for discussion at the Cessnock Shire Council meeting yesterday, and councillors were rather outspoken regarding certain statements made by the recording certain of the State Recruiting Council. In view of the fact that nothing should be done to hamper the progress of recruiting it is just as well not to detail the discussion, but it is a matter for regret that recent arrangements were not carried out on smoother lines by the officer representing the State Council.
