DANGARSLEIGH WAR MEMORIAL, Armidale 1921.

22 April, 2013 4:51PM AEST

16 dead, but who were they?

Dangarsleigh Roll of Honour

For years Judith Grieve gave thanks to the men named on the Dangarsleigh ANZAC Memorial, then she found out who they were. We know their rank, their initials and sometimes even a first name. We know their family name, but as the years pass, do we really know who they are? War memorials around the country tragically hold the names of hundreds, thousands of men and women who lost their lives in the war. Their names shall be remembered for generations to come, but do they deserve to be more than just a name etched in stone? Judith Grieve thinks so. For years she has attended the Dangarsleigh memorial services on April 25th, and each year wondered about the 16 men on the memorial.

"I asked around and nobody knew who any of them were, not even the old timers of this district," she says. "So that was my project, my obsession for eight or nine years." Judith was able to discover a story about all 16 men, including her own great uncle. "It turns out he was a school teacher," she says. Harry Hopetoun Wharton taught at Grose's Creek and he was much loved by the community. He was mortally wounded on his first day at Gallipoli. Each year, Judith brings to life one of the names etched on the memorial.

In 2010, 95 years after he was shot in the trenches of Gallipoli, Cyril Herbert Dodson Lane's story is being told once more. Judith has discovered Cyril was killed at Gallipoli. A tall man, 5 feet 11 inches, he was shot when he stood up in a trench. We know how he died, but there is so much more to tell. Judith's research has revealed Cyril was an engineer in the expeditionary forces in New Guinea. He later joined the AIF and was sent to the front, but not before meeting the love of his life while in Sydney. He married Evelyn Maclurcan, daughter of the owner of the prestigious Wentworth Hotel in Sydney. "She had his child, four months after he was killed," Judith says quietly.

She says Cyril was, in fact, the only man on the memorial who was married and had a child. "Cyril's story is the same as hundreds and thousands of other young men, but different because he was an individual," Judith says. She says there is great satisfaction in turning these men back into individuals instead of "just another soldier who was shot." Peter Elliot has been leading the Anzac Services at Dangarsleigh for 30 years. His father did the job before him, and his grandfather before that. "Things dawn on you as you get older and you start to appreciate the things that people have done before you," he says.

Peter says the change to the memorial service since Judith has been telling the stories is tangible. Numbers have risen from 40 to more than 300 in recent years. "Judith started to give these stories and descriptions of these men and how they gave their lives for their country, and we started seeing 100 then 200 people turn up, and last year 300 people," he says. The memorial itself even has a tale to tell. It was built by a local landholder Alfred Haroldston Perrett in the 1920's, the owner of a property called 'Chevy Chase'. Judith says Mr Perrett used to tell people he built it as a promise to two of his farm workers; that if they enlisted, he would build a monument to all those men who went west during the war.

Judith doesn't believe this is the real reason. She believes he was trying to heal the emotional wound left by an estranged son Alfred, killed in action. "I believe Mr Perrett really wanted to build this monument to the memory of his son who was killed, but he was too proud to say that," she says. "That [story] was a bit of a smoke screen, because he did lose his boy that he'd never really made his peace with." To add insult to injury, most of young Alfred's personal effects were lost at sea, as they were being returned home, but a diary somehow made it. An inscription inside entreats readers "Should ever this be found by a stranger or a friend, grateful would I be if they would kindly send it to my mother". The diary, complete with a shrapnel hole, has been donated to the New England Heritage Centre. Judith also has copies of all the letters the young soldier sent home before he was killed in 1917.

Regardless of why the monument was built, it stands today, an elaborate memorial, lovingly tended by members of the community. It is surrounded by five pillars representing the colonies, a triangle centre pillar representing England, Scotland and Ireland, and a globe on the top which represents the world. "The symbolism represents the mother country and all her far flung colonies," says Judith. The monument was donated to the State in 1991. It is now in the trust of the Armidale Dumaresq Council, but the local community are dedicated to maintaining the site. Peter Elliot says it means a great deal to the Dangarsleigh community. "This is becoming a focal point for a community gathering," he says.

"There's only this and bush fires that seems to bring people together out in the bush anymore." The graves of Mr Perrett and his wife are just metres away from the memorial. "Mr Perrett would look down on us these days, and be very proud of the legacy he left behind, and be grateful to us for carrying it on," says Peter. There are so many stories to tell here, but none so compelling as the ones behind the names on the memorial. "They all developed personalities as I was able to gather information about them," Judith says.

Frank Brennan was just 17 when he enlisted against the wishes of his family. Frank had threatened to change his name and travel to Victoria to enlist. Judith says his mother finally gave in and signed the permission form. What resulted was the loss of a young larrikin, and a family rift that still exists today. The photo of young Frank in a singlet and smoking a pipe is one of Judith's favourites, but the man himself was a bit of a trouble maker. "He got drunk and disorderly, and gave cheek, and he had his problems, he was just a wild young Irish lad, shockingly wounded and killed," she recalls.

At sixpence per letter, families were able to place the names of their loved ones on the Dangarsleigh Memorial. "I guess it was his grandparents who put his name on the monument, but I don't know." Each Anzac Day we are asked to remember the men and women who gave their lives so we could be free. When our eyes brim with tears at the thought of unknown soldiers, how much more could we appreciate the sacrifice, if we know the stories of the names left behind.

DUBBO WAR MEMORIAL

The unveiling and dedication ceremony took place on Anzac Day, 25 April 1925. The momentous occasion was reported on detail in The Dubbo Liberal and Macquarie Advocate on 28 April. The unveiling was conducted by Dubbo's most distinguished military son, Brigadier General James Heane, DSO, CMG, CB. He was accompanied by Bishop Long, Anglican Bishop of Bathurst, who performed the dedication. The newspaper enthusiastically reported:

It is estimated that upwards of 4000 people gathered last Saturday morning round the monument that the people of Dubbo and district have erected to the memory of their fallen soldiers. The ceremony from beginning to end was most impressive, and the impassioned and beautiful address delivered by Bishop Long thrilled, amazed and deeply touched every man, woman and child who was present. It was a speech the like of which few who were there have heard or will be likely to hear again.
