This N.C.O. was a member of a party detailed to mop up a strong point. He entered the trench with four men and formed a block in the vicinity of the strong point in spite of strong opposition by enemy bombers. In spite of having three of his party wounded, he courageously held on till relieved by a strong party. He exhibited fine leadership, and was a splendid example to his men of personal courage."

33rd Battalion AIF. Private: 2823 Robert CASEY. "For Courageous Service and Devotion to Duty on the night of 3rd/4th March 1918 during raid on enemy trenches in vicinity of WARNETON. He was a member of the right assault wire crossing party, with another man clearing the entry to trench and held it against enemy bombers till the strong party came through. He also entered and bombed a dugout personally killing four of the enemy. He showed great coolness and bravery throughout the whole operation.

Informant: Corporal: 3069 Henry Dayrell HERDSON (C Coy, 12th Platoon, 33rd Battalion AIF) "I saw Private: 880 Robert "Bob" SUTHERLAND (C Coy, 12th Platoon, 33rd Battalion AIF) killed outright by a Machine Gun Bullet while we were holding the line at Bray. He was hit on the head, been told by his brother Private: 879 George SUTHERLAND who is with the Battalion that a cross has been erected.

George was a single 23 year old Shearer from Ashford, New South Wales upon his enlistment with the AIF.

Mary Jane Grieves was born on board the "John Bunyan" off the Cape of Good Hope on the 20th September 1857 and arrived in Australia on the 27th October 1857. She married Daniel Sutherland at "Brickwall" Walcha, New South Wales on the 26th December 1877. Daniel and Mary moved the family to Ashford. They brought a Settlers Lease of 5,720 acres and named it 'Glencoe'. Glencoe was on the Severn River and not long after arriving he cleared some bush and was one of the first wheat growers in the region. Supplies were brought in every 3 months. Mail was available once a week and the nearest mail route was 3 miles away. At this stage Daniel and Mary had 11 children.

Daniel and Mary had five sons enlist and serve in WW1. The four that deployed were: Private: 2936 David SUTHERLAND. 2nd A.M.G.S. (29), Private: 880 Robert SUTHERLAND. 33rd Battalion AIF (24) (KIA), Sergeant: 789 George SUTHERLAND. MM 33rd Battalion AIF (22)  Private:1696 Alexander SUTHERLAND. 36th-33rd Battalion AIF. (19) and Private: 90124 Adam "Dan" SUTHERLAND Q.M. Stores, Liverpool who tried to enlist several times for overseas service.  

In 1920Braeside was sold and Daniel and Mary moved to Ashford Glencoe, New South Wales, Australia. Both were active in town and regional affairs. Daniel was the delegate for the Farmers and Settlers, The Graziers Association and Bush Nursing.

Corporal: 1235 Roy Leonard SWADLING. "For conspicuous courage on the afternoon on 21st June 1918, North East of VILLERS BRETONNEUX. Corporal SWADLING M.M. showed great courage during a daylight reconnaissance of NO MANS LAND, and subsequently raid on enemy front line when and endeavour was made to capture two Germans. He entered the trench and remained there until the party was forced to retire owing to the approach of an enemy Machine Gun Team". 

Sergeant: 775 James Arnold HARRIS. "For conspicuous courage on the afternoon on 21st June 1918, North East of VILLERS BRETONNEUX. This NCO was one of a party of four N.C.Os. who accompanied Lieutenant: 896 Albert Marshall WIDDY MM. on a daylight reconnaissance of NO MAN'S LAND. While on this reconnaissance two Germans were observed seated in enemy front line. The party entered the trench in an endeavour to capture the two Germans, and during this encounter which ensued, Sergt. HARRIS showed great gallantry and fearlessness. His action was an inspiration to the whole Battalion.

Corporal: 1661: Keith HORNE. "For conspicuous courage on the afternoon on 21st June 1918, North East of VILLERS BRETONNEUX. This NCO accompanied Lieutenant: 896 Albert Marshall WIDDY. MM and three other NCOs on a daylight reconnaissance of NO MAN'S LAND. On seeing two Germans in enemy front line, the party endevoured to take the two German's prisoner. Corporal HORNE displayed great courage and fearlessness in remaining out of the trench and guarding both flanks. His actions have had an inspiring effect on his comrades.

Lieutenant: 896 Albert Marshall "Jack" WIDDY. MM. "Reconnaissance on the previous afternoon. The party returned safely in our lines about 5.15 pm. Throughout this daring exploit Lieutenant WIDDY displayed the greatest gallantry and leadership of a high order, and he brought back valuable information. Not only has his actions has a most exhilarating and inspiring influence on the whole Battalion but it also had a very wholesome effect on the enemy. Statements by the following witnesses are attached.

David Herbert Moore served for 2 years with the Senior Cadets and 5 years with the 13th Infantry prior to enlisting with the AIF on the 24th November 1915 at Armidale, N.S.W.

Informant: Sergeant: 1245 William SIMPSON. (D Company 14 Platoon 33rd Battalion AIF) "I was going up to the front line about December 12th at Armentieres, when I passed Sergeant 724 George James CARTER (C Company 33rd Battalion AIF) being carried away on a stretcher down a communication trench just after he had been wounded.  I recognised him and the stretcher bearers told me it was he. I knew him well, as we were in training together. I heard afterwards that he had died but I am sorry I cannot say where he was buried. Possibly Sergeant: 133 David Herbert  MOORE (C Company 33rd Battalion AIF) would be able to tell you as they were great friends and were always together.

INFORMATION
Ernest Shadrack Key enlisted with B Company 36th Battalion on the 11th of January 1916 and was an original member of the Battalion and left Sydney on board HMAT A72 "Beltana" on the 13th May 1916 and was promoted to Lance Corporal on the 30th of May. He disembarked at Devonport, England on the 9th of July 1916. He commenced training with the 9th Training Battalion and proceeded overseas on the 22nd of November 1916.

Ernest was Taken on Strength in the field with the 36th Battalion and on the 25th of March 1917 he was promoted to Corporal when Corporal: 370 William John STEAD was Wounded in Action on the 25th of March. Ernest remained in action with the 36th Battalion and was commended for his bravery and gallantry during recent offensives at MESSINES on the 18th of June.

The recent offensives took there toll on Ernest and he was admitted to hospital on the 26th of June for a week and rejoined his Battalion on the 2nd of August and was promoted to Sergeant when Sergeant: 357 John Thomas STAPLETON received a Commissioned Rank in the field, and a short time later on the 13th of November Ernest was promoted to Company Sergeant Major, Warrant Officer2 when Company Sergeant Major: 356 Leo Aubrey WILSON was Wounded in Action and taken off strength.

On the 13th April 1918 Ernest was Wounded in Action but was only off the line for a week before he rejoined the Battalion on the 22nd of April and the week after the 36th Battalion was disbanded on the 30th of April 1918 which saw Ernest being transferred to the 33rd Battalion as a Company Sergeant Major.

36th Battalion's last Parade before being disbanded. 30th April 1918.
Ernest was Taken on Strength with the 33rd Battalion on the 6th of May and he was allocated the prefix A after his service number as now 484a. Ernest was admitted to Hospital as sick on the 10th of June 1918 and after being discharged he was sent back to England with the 9th Training Battalion before returning to Australia on the 18th of July and he was discharged from the AIF on the 1st of September 1919.

Family Information
Ernest was a single 27 year old Labourer from Agyle Street, Moss Vale, N.S.W. where he was in the care of R.H.Jarvis.

My Great Grandfather Ernest Key was in the 36th during the Battle of Messines.

His diary reads: 7th Thursday - Hopped over at 3:10 in the morning, objective taken without a hitch, heavy casualties. We were carrying up ammunition and sundries all day. Terribly knocked up, buried twice myself, very badly shook up. A bit of sleep late at night.

Distinguished Conduct Medal.

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in command of his platoon. He organised the consolidation and captured an advanced post and a field gun with great dash, afterwards holding the captured post under heavy shell fire and keeping his men well in hand by his cheerfulness and optimism.
